As Liz Rainbow sat at her desk, her eyes glued to the computer screen, she couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. Her friend's missing girlfriend had been found, and it was all thanks to her tireless searching. The clock ticked away as she scrolled through endless pages of information, each click leading her closer to closing the case.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. She looked up to see her friend standing there, looking exhausted but grateful. "I have some news," he said, his voice hoarse. "She's at a hotel downtown. I just got off the phone with her."
Liz felt a surge of excitement. "That's amazing news!" She stood up, ready to embrace him, but as he took a step forward, she noticed something was off. His eyes were glassy and he seemed dazed.
"Are you okay?" she asked, concern creeping into her voice.
He shook his head, confusion written all over his face. "All I remember is waking up here," he said, gesturing around the room. "I feel like I've been asleep for hours."
Liz's heart sank. She knew she had to tell him the truth, but it wasn't going to be easy. She led him over to the couch and gently sat him down. "I have some news for you," she began, taking a deep breath. "I found your girlfriend, but there's a catch."
His eyes widened with fear. "What is it?" he asked, his voice trembling.
"I know where she is," Liz said, "but you're not going to like how you're going to get there."
She took a step back and gestured for him to stand up. As he did, he gasped in surprise. Looking down, he saw that he was now the size of a tiny doll. "What have you done to me?" he shrieked, his voice high-pitched and panicked.
Liz smiled sadly. "This is just the way things are going to be from now on," she said. "You're going to have to adjust."
Tears streamed down his face as he tried to process what was happening. "Why did you do this to me?" he asked, sobbing.
Liz took him in her arms, trying to offer what comfort she could. "I didn't want you to miss out on seeing your girlfriend," she said. "And I thought this would be the only way to make sure you could."
She led him to a small box on the coffee table. Inside was a hotel room key and a note. "Your girlfriend left this for you," she said, handing him the note. "It has all the information you need to find her."
He sniffled and took the key, his fingers trembling as he held it. "Thank you," he whispered, looking up at Liz. "I don't know how I'll ever repay you."
Liz smiled softly. "Just remember that I'm always here for you," she said. "And you'll always have me."
With a final hug, she watched as he left her apartment, his tiny figure disappearing into the night. She knew it was a risky move, but she couldn't help but hope that it would all work out in the end.
As she closed the door behind him, she felt a mix of relief and dread. She knew she had made a decision that would change both their lives forever. But deep down, she also knew that sometimes, you just had to take a leap of faith.
